The first African American I ever knew. I played sports with him starting in 7th grade at Vance Jr. High after schools were integrated. I remember he could dunk a tennis shoe (not a basketball) thru the basket. A good football player as well. I hope he had a good life!

Charlie was also my first African American friend. Nicest guy to me. I just wonder what it was like for him in the climate of those days, but he never seemed to carry a grudge.

Remember vividly Vance Junior High volleyball. All of us served underhanded, but not Charlie. He stood a few steps behind the line, tossed the ball in the air, ran forward, jumped and hit it overhanded (leftie). Left the rest of us in total awe.

He was an incredible athlete and a great human being.
